Viewing Eclipse – Richard Shoemaker, Physics and Astronomy Teacher, Dawson College

January 20, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm UTC-4

Richard Shoemaker: “Chasing Eclipses”
Richard Shoemaker, Department of Physics, Dawson
College, will tell us all about eclipses: What are solar and
lunar eclipses, and how are they caused? Why are some
types of eclipse common, while the most spectacular
eclipses are quite rare? How should we view a solar eclipse
safely? He will also tell us how and where to see the great
American eclipse of 2017, and tell us about the treat in store
for Montreal in 2024. The talk will be extensively
illustrated with diagrams and photographs, many taken by
the speaker.
Richard Shoemaker taught physics and astrophysics at
Dawson College for over forty years. He has been an
amateur astronomer and “eclipse buff” since age 9, and has
traveled the world to see eight total solar eclipses.
