THE UNIVERSITY WOMEN’S CLUB OF MONTREAL PUBLIC FOUNDATION
This is the UWCM’s charitable and fundraising instrument. The Foundation was established by a Trust Document made effective April 15, 1985, in order to receive donations and issue tax receipts. This Trust Document was last amended and restated on December 21, 2021.
Each post-secondary educational institution receiving funds from the Foundation gives bursaries to female students in financial need. As well, the Foundation supports registered charities within its community whose purposes are consistent with the UWCM’s objectives.
The Foundation is overseen by a Board of Trustees consisting of a group of five to seven appointed members in good standing who meet regularly to discuss strategy and the allocation of funds raised for that particular fiscal year.
FUNDRAISING ACTIVITIES
- Annual Giving Campaign from October through to June 30.
- Donations from members and supporters to CanadaHelps.
- One-time events like a circus-school performance, a sightseeing cruise, a symphony orchestral performance, and a documentary film screening.
According to Article 7 of the Trust Document, funds “must be disbursed in accordance with the Income Tax Act (Canada) and any other applicable laws.” The Foundation disburses approximately half the funds raised to each of:
-
EDUCATION
Bursaries for female students are made available to recipients selected by the institutions in the name of UWCM.
-
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
The UWCM, through its Foundation, supports community organizations such as Auberge Madeleine, Auberge Shalom pour Femmes, Chez Doris, Resilience Montréal, the Native Women’s Shelter, and the Old Brewery Mission’s Patricia Mackenzie Pavilion.
Occasionally, distinguished members are immortalized through the Foundation:
Betsy Barber Memorial Award: Following her death in 2005, the UWCM decided to honour a cherished member by creating this Concordia University award. Betsy was not only a president of the UWCM but also a graduate of the MBA program at Concordia University. Each year, a female student in the MBA program at Concordia’s John Molson School of Business is given this award.
Anne-Marie Trahan Memorial Fund: As a result of a generous bequest from the late Anne-Marie Trahan, distinguished jurist, Université de Montréal graduate, and valued member of the UWCM, this memorial fund was established in 2020 to provide an annual bursary to a deserving female student at Polytechnique Montréal.
