This academic competition is a unique opportunity to engage secondary school girls in the global conversation on the central theme of gender inequalities and its impact on the empowerment of women and girls, based on the principles of human rights.

The theme chosen by UWCM reflects one of the UN themes which will be debated at the sixty third session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW63) in New York on March 2019: “Women’s empowerment and the link to sustainable development ”.

Participating secondary school students from le Collège international Marie de France, The Sacred Heart School of Montreal, the The Kahnawake Survival School et la Villa Sainte Marcelline will reflect on the feminization of poverty and its impact on the empowerment of women and the development of girls in Canada. The top three projects will be awarded scholarships during an Awards Ceremony scheduled for May 2019. Each participating school will benefit from a public speaking mentorship offered through our collaboration with Stella Musica.

In 2017, the University Women’s Club of Montreal had successfully launched the first North American edition of Les Olympes de la Parole competition, based on the French model. Implemented in several European and African countries, this competition was recognized by the Council of Europe as part of its “All Different, All Equal” program to promote diversity and gender equality among European youth.
